Chapter 17

“Mary, come quickly!” Agnes Lowry, the town’s seamstress, burst into the house without knocking.

She startled Mary so much that she dropped the eggs she’d been about to set on the counter, sending them shattering all the floor. “What?” Mary cried in alarm. “What is it?”

“Thomas,” Agnes said grimly, grabbing her by the arm.

Mary’s heart sank to her feet. “Oh God. Oh no. What is it? What’s happened?”

“He’s all right,” Agnes reassured her hastily. “Sorry, I’ve never been accused of having much tact. A bullet just winged him a bit. He’s at the doc’s office—”

Mary shot out of the house and ran like the hounds of Hades were pursuing her. Their house was about a mile from town, but she didn’t for one second consider asking someone to drive her. Her sole focus was on getting to Thomas’ side.

Dear God, let him be okay, she prayed over and over as she ran at top speed, thanking God for how strong all her hard work over the years had made her. Thoughts of Abby haunted her with every step she took. Don’t let me lose another person I love. Please, dear Lord. Have mercy.

It took her no time at all to cover the distance and she was only breathing slightly hard when she arrived on Doc Eisenhower’s doorstep.

Like Anita, she didn’t bother knocking but burst in, fear covering her like a dark, heavy mantle. As she walked in, she immediately spotted Thomas lying the doc’s examination table, his shirt off and Doc Eisenhower examining a bloodied bandage on his upper right arm.

“Thomas!” Mary rushed over to him, so thankful when she saw his eyes open that her knees went a little wobbly. It didn’t help that his bare chest was the color of an eggplant or that he had a similarly purple bruise adorning his temple. “What happened?”

He grimaced as Doc peeled away the bandage and winced when the medical man started poking about. “A man I caught in an act of thievery didn’t take kindly to the idea of being behind bars,” he explained. “I really don’t think he shot to kill. He was at point-blank range and missed. I think this was intended as a warning.”

“Was it Richard?” Mary cried, almost preferring to focus on that than on the image of her husband being so close to death that if the gun had shifted even a few millimeters, Thomas might not be here now.

“No, sweetheart,” Thomas replied, reaching out his uninjured arm and catching her hand. “It was the thief who burglarized Tony’s store the day we first met. He’s not from these parts and thought he could get away with it because in the last town they didn’t have much in the way of law enforcement—oh honey. Don’t.”

Tears began streaming down Mary’s face, and she was helpless to stop them, just as she’d been helpless the day Abby died. “I thought—she said you were okay—but I didn’t know—I-I-I,” she stammered, covering her face with her hands. “I thought
